Auto Care for summer

Nobody wants to spend their holiday stranded on the road, but this happens to millions of people every year. Something as simple as a loose band or low oil can leave lying without warning. Here are some ways to care for your security on your next trip.

Inspect the battery

Inspect the battery terminals and make sure that the battery clamps are tight. If there’s corrosion, clean it with a mixture of baking soda and water and put a set of battery washers to prevent recur. Fill the battery cells with distilled water. The shop your local AutoZone can test your battery free of charge to make sure you are ready to hit the road.

Check the coolant level and inspect the radiator cap

Wait for the engine before removing the radiator cap is cool. If the rubber gasket inside the cap is cracked or brittle, replace the lid. Fill with coolant in the overflow tank, not the radiator. If the antifreeze is more than two years for their safety drain and refill the cooling system before your trip.

Inspect radiator hoses

Check the ends of the tube clamps for cracks or corrosion. Because extreme heat can cause leaks and damage, check the hoses to see if they are hardened, cracked or fluffy. If any of these warning signs are present, replace the hose immediately.

Inspect fan belts

Check belts for cracks or verify are smooth and sure they have the proper voltage. A worn or loose belt can cause engine overheating. Bands should always carry spare in the trunk, especially if you have a late model vehicle that operates with a single serpentine or V band manifold. Failure of this band, you cannot move.

Inspect tires

All tires, including the spare, should be properly inflated. Refer to owner’s manual or tire sidewall to see the proper pressure. Wheels with the correct amount of air increase the gas mileage and the life of the same.

Carry an emergency

Even the best care can be broken down cars. Prepare ahead: a cell phone, a container of water, flashlight with extra batteries, flares or reflective triangles, jumper cables, fire extinguisher and first aid kit.
